Casualties

Section 7 (Part 1)

Censorship is a fact of any war. The censoring of reports on the Blitz, however, quickly became a matter of huge public concern, with official casualty figures proving to be the most contentious, fuelling a debate which continued for well over a year after the event.

These figures became the main issue after the first press statement from the Government said that, although attacks had been heavy, casualties were not expected to be numerous. This statement was treated with incredulity. On 18th March, a further statement was made by the Ministry of Home Security saying that about 500 people had been killed in the raid on Clydeside, a figure which was also treated with disdain.
