Mol'ls Map of Central Scotland 1725
Moll's Map of Central Scotland 1725

A variety of historical maps are kept at Clydebank and Dumbarton Libraries, including many large-scale official Ordnance Survey (OS) maps of parts of West Dunbartonshire, as it is now called.

Researchers use old local maps for a number of purposes. They are an obvious adjunct to local history research, showing the extent of human settlements, the former lay-out of roads, names of farms and buildings that have since disappeared, and so on.

It should be borne in mind, however, that maps in general (including official OS maps) do not present a continuous record. The first series of OS maps belong to the late 1850s and early 1860s, the second to the 1890s. The third survey took place mainly about 1914, though not published until after the First World War. The next survey was not until the 1930s, and the one after that mainly represents the situation in the mid 1960s.

As well as the OS maps, there are smaller scale maps dating from the 18th century, and the local parts of national surveys such as those of Blaeu, published in the 1600s. There are also some useful maps, such as Parish maps, published in local history books.
