The West Dunbartonshire Local Plan was adopted in March 2010 and provides the local planning framework for the Council area, excluding that part which is located within the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park.

A new statutory basis for development planning in Scotland commenced in February 2009 meaning a new Local Development Plan will be prepared for West Dunbartonshire.

The Glasgow and Clyde Valley Joint Structure Plan gives the strategic planning overview for the whole of the Glasgow and Clyde Valley area, including West Dunbartonshire. This is due to be replaced by a Strategic Development Plan.
