New Deal Environment Task Force

The Council acts as the lead organisation for New Deal Environment Task Force (ETF) within Dunbartonshire. ETF is government sponsored training for young adults (18-24yrs) who have been unemployed for more than 6 months. Within the West Dunbartonshire area projects include white goods recycling, landscape gardening, canal maintenance, scaffolding and property refurbishment.

However, ETF is not only designed to give people work experience but also to improve the local environment. Past projects have included upgrading of pathways, landscaping of communal garden areas, painting of churches and upgrading of community buildings. One of the newest projects aims to recycle over 300 tonnes of discarded white goods every year.

Over the two years to April 2003 there were 147 starters on the scheme across Dunbartonshire. 57% of those leaving ETF training went into jobs or onto additional training. That was nearly 100 people who would not otherwise have had a job.
