The Alexandria Town Centre Masterplan, which was the subject of public consultation in 2007 and 2008, was adopted by West Dunbartonshire Council in October 2008 as Supplementary Planning Guidance. The Masterplan was produced by Gillespies, a multi-disciplinary team of urban designers and architects.
The Masterplan identifies six key development sites within the town centre. These are:
- Kippen Dairy Site
- Leven Cottage Site
- Mitchell Way Site
- Railway Site
- Alexander Street Area
- Leven Street Site
The Masterplan identifies key interventions, both development and public realm based, designed to foster sustained growth. A robust delivery strategy with projects that can be phased and realised within the overall vision is also set out in the document.

Kippen Dairy and Leven Cottage Sites
A feasibility study produced for these sites by Cordale Housing Association in conjunction with Dunbritton Housing Association has been agreed by the Council. 56 social rented units are to be developed over the two sites. A planning application is to be submitted by the Housing Association in due course.
Mitchell Way Site
The Council is in the process of developing a marketing brief for the Mitchell Way site. As part of the production of the brief an Information Day was held by the Council which took place in the Community Education Centre on 31 March 2010. The Information Day included a drop in session during which members of the public had the opportunity to view boards explaining the proposals relating to the Mitchell Way site as well as an evening presentation.

Retail consultants, Colliers International, have been appointed to provide property advisory services to the Council to assist with the marketing and disposal of the development opportunity. A development brief to market the development site is to be prepared.
In March 2010 an underused pedestrian bridge was removed by the Council to facilitate the development of the site and improve pedestrian movement in the town centre.
