Sylvania Way Bridge Canopy Project - The Swan

Clydebank new bridge canopy

'The Swan' was created in 2008 as the replacement canopy over the main canal pedestrian bridge between the northern and southern malls of the Clyde Shopping Centre at Sylvania Way.

It was generally perceived that the former lattice structure canopy over the pedestrian bridge did not reflect local aspirations for the future of Clydebank, its town centre or the canal corridor. Following a national architectural competition, Glasgow based RMJM architects were appointed in January 2007 to deliver a "Swan in Flight" canopy design.

Following open contractor tendering, Yoker based firm, Gray & Dick Ltd were appointed. Works to assemble the new structure on site and to remove the old canopy began in February 2008 and were completed at the end of May 2008.

It has since become a key focal point within Clydebank and, with the associated canalbank improvements, has brought new life to the town centre.

The success of the canopy has been recognised nationally being commended in the Saltire Society Engineering Awards and in the engineering category of the 2009 Scottish Design Awards.
