Dumbarton Town Centre Projects

Dumbarton town centre has a population of 21,000 and is located on the banks of the River Leven, overlooking Dumbarton Rock and Castle. Rediscovering Dumbarton, Dumbarton Town Centre Action Plan, was produced in January 2001, by West Dunbartonshire Council, in partnership with the former Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire. Since then a number of improvements have taken place to the High Street area, car parks, listed buildings, shopfronts, signage, lighting and CCTV. Guidance also been produced to help deliver projects such as flooding, traffic management, masterplanning, retailing, public realm and shopfront improvements.

However, Dumbarton still faces the challenge of improving its retail offer in a climate where similar towns are also struggling. In April 2010, following a Facebook Campaign to save Dumbarton High Street, Dumbarton Town Centre Forum was formed. An Improvement Plan was then produced which assisted in Scottish Government Town Centre Regeneration Funding being secured for the town centre.
