WDC has been improving the appearance of streets and spaces within Dumbarton town centre since 2002. A Public Realm Design Guide was prepared beforehand to identify appropriate materials and priority areas for improvement. New hard surfaces, street furniture and brighter street lighting have been introduced in the High Street, streets and lanes leading off High Street and along a key route to the railway station. Car parks in and around the town centre have also been improved and extended where possible. A number of car parks have been designated as short stay. These matters have been reviewed recently. The changes and improvements have been made possible by a combination of funding from WDC, the former Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire, the Scottish Executive's Public Transport Fund and European Regional Development Funding.
