From time to time focus groups are recruited from the 600 or so panel members who indicated an interest in participating when they joined. The most recent evaluation of panel users (those who commission surveys and focus groups from the panel) indicated interest in having focus group reports on the website.
Focus groups can provide insight into aspects of panel survey results. They can also deal with issues which aren't easily covered by a survey.
Depending on the consultation subject, it can be important to use the information from focus groups along with information from other consultation methods (such as surveys) - as they provide qualitative information but not a widely representative view.
Focus groups have been carried out on a range of subjects:
Racial Equality in West Dunbartonshire - December 2008
Local Democracy Focus Groups - March 2009
West Dunbartonshire News - July 2009
Older People Focus Group - Full Report
