Fair Trade Information

The Fairtrade Steering group has been operating for 2 years. In September last year the group was successful in achieving Fairtrade status for Balloch. The next stage is to apply for the rest of West Dunbartonshire.

A number of events have been held during February to May 2008 including;

- Tasting session in canteen at Garshake Council offices 27th February

- Fairtrade stall in Clydebank Shopping Centre 5th March

- Meet the buyer event at Clydebank College 13th March

- Fairtrade stall at Community Day on 29th March

Many schools and churches within the area are also involved in promoting Fairtrade and there are plenty of local retail outlets with a range of Fairtrade products. The challenge for the group is to compile all of the information required to meet the criteria, including generating publicity at further events.

The Fairtrade Foundation encourages campaigns to raise awareness in villages, towns and counties in the UK. These campaigns have led to a substantial increase in consumer demand for Fairtrade goods – and where there is a demand, suppliers follow.

The Scottish Fairtrade Forum's overall goal is to help Scotland achieve the fair trade nation criteria by 2010, then to help it maintain fair trade nation status as a symbol that Scotland values and promotes trade justice and fair labour standards in countries around the world.
