Community Councils

Community Councils were set up by Act of Parliament in 1973 to carry out the following activities:
  • Find out the views of their community
  • Co-ordinate and express these views to the local and public authorities
  • Act in the interests of their community
In order to do this Community Councils need to:
  • Be proactive and consult the community
  • Encourage community spirit
  • Represent the whole community including young people, disabled people, lone parents and elderly people
  • Be familiar with West Dunbartonshire policies
  • Keep the Council informed
  • Be prepared to expand their activities
Community Councils bring local people together to help make things happen.  Their primary purpose is to find out and express the views of the community to the local authority and other public bodies.  Many Community Councils also involve themselves in a wide range of other activities including fundraising, organising community events, undertaking environmental and educational projects and much more.
Local authorities and other bodies consult with Community Councils on issues affecting the community.  These issues depend to a large extent on what is important to each community, however local authorities are required to keep Community Councils informed on planning applications and involve them in the community planning process.
They are run by your neighbourhood and ensure that local concerns and issues are reported back to your local authority and other relevant public authorities.
