CARA (Challenging and Responding to Abuse)

The CARA Project offers support, information, advocacy and counselling to women, children and young people (school age) living in West Dunbartonshire who have experienced all forms of violence including:

 

  • Women experiencing domestic abuse, rape, sexual assualt and any other forms of gendered violence

 

  • Women Survivors of childhood sexual abuse

 

  • Children and young people who have been affected by domestic abuse, rape and sexual assault 

 

 

Definition of Domestic Abuse

... Domestic abuse (as gender-based abuse), can be perpetrated by partners or ex-partners and can include physical abuse (assault and physical attack involving a range of behaviour), sexual abuse (acts which degrade and humiliate women and are perpetrated against their will, including rape) and mental and emotional abuse (such as threats, verbal abuse, racial abuse, withholding money and other types of controlling behaviour such as isolation from family or friends).

 

The CARA service provides a confidential and free service to women, children and young people including:

 

  • Practical short term support, advocacy and information

  • Person centred counselling

  • Someone to talk to in confidence

  • Help with safety planning

  • Access to other relevant services

  • Support may be negotiated for young men up to 18 years who have been affected by domestic abuse

  • Appointments may take place in settings across Alexandria, Dumbarton and Clydebank

AGENCIES

 

The CARA Project coordinates a network of practitioners in the area (WD Violence Against Women Link Network) who meet approximately every 6 weeks to exchange information, share good practice and keep up to date with relevant and current research and literature.

CARA Information Sessions 2012

CARA also offers agencies - Information Sessions - these are informal meetings held in the WDVAW Partnership Offices and are open to all staff and students as an introduction to the services CARA provides.
