This is a new extension of provision to the CARA project. This service will provide free and confidential counselling, support and advocacy to all children and young people in the West Dunbartonshire area who have experienced all forms of Domestic Abuse. The project will also be able to support children and young people who may have been sexually assaulted and are in crisis.
This service was developed due to research carried out by the West Dunbartonshire Violence Against Women Partnership in 2008 which focused on Children and Young People’s experience of Domestic Abuse. This research highlights the adverse impact that Domestic Abuse can have on children and young people’s development whether it is experienced directly or indirectly from witnessing the trauma against their mothers.
Findings suggested that there was a need to minimise the gap in services relating to the support needs of children and young people.
Counselling and support sessions are open ended and will be negotiated between the child and counsellor. Young people over 12 would be encouraged to self refer where appropriate to allow them to make their own choice and be involved in the process. Alternatively it is essential that referrers seek informed consent for the referral to proceed. Accommodation for Counselling and Support sessions can be negotiated depending on the needs and locality of children and young people.
