Where will CEDAR be implemented?
The CEDAR project is being piloted within West Dunbartonshire; it is proposed that 1 programme will run within Dumbarton/Vale of Leven and the other will run within Clydebank. Venues will be based within the community and be central for group participants to get to.
Who will facilitate the project?
A collaborative approach is taken towards group facilitation; facilitators will be recruited from different organisations. This provides an opportunity for the sharing of experience and skills from different organisations. Facilitators will be required to have a gender based analysis of domestic abuse and to have completed the Glasgow Caledonian University Training Intervention Programme. Facillitators will be required to commit to a half day each week for 12 weeks and 12 hours for training and preparation.
When will the programmes run?
Our first CEDAR group work programme began on 14th September, 2011 in Dumbarton. Our next group is due to start in January 2012. Please call if you would like to make a referral. A group-work programme lasts for 12 weeks. The women's group will usually be in the morning for 2 hours and the children and young people's group will be in the afternoon for an hour and a half.
How successful has CEDAR been?
CEDAR has proved to be successful in Canada, England and Scotland. Findings from the initial evaluation show that the Cedar pilot in Scotland provides a range of support and benefits for children including: a greater knowledge of safety; strengthened relationships between mothers and children; changed attitudes to violence; reduction in feelings of shame or guilt relating to the abuse and helping them deal with their emotions towards abusive fathers.
The West Dunbartonshire's Interim evaluation report is also available.
Comments include:
“I’ve been able to talk to my Mum when there’s something wrong and my Mum says that’s actually a lot better because she’s able to sort it all out.” (Child)
“It was better being in the group [than being on my own]. I learnt that I wasn’t the only one who in the world that… has been through it”. (Child)
I think when I took myself out the selfish mode and took myself out the box, like the wee world I was living in, and just seen and accepted what they were saying to me, like… ‘speak to your child’ and all these things… and I came back and tried these things, it actually made a difference in my life”. (Mother)
Who should I contact?
CEDAR is being led by a team of workers who support Women and Children who have experienced Domestic Abuse. This team is part of the West Dunbartonshire Violence Against Women Partnership. We are currently looking for REFERRALS.
It is important that:
Mums and children are interested and have given consent for a referral to be made as CEDAR is a voluntary programme.
That mums and children are in recovery and the perpetrator is no longer living within the family home.
Children are aged 4-16 years old.
