Behind Closed Door -The Impact of Domestic Violence on Children
This report, developed jointly by UNICEF. The Body Shop International and the Secretariat for the
United Nations Secretary- General’s study on Violence Against Children, examines some of the
underlying causes of domestic violence and the impact on children of being exposed to violence
in the home. Contains useful information on domestic abuse and its impact on children.
Childline Case Notes, Sexual Orientation, homophobia and Homophobic Bullying
Childline has published a series of reports based on analysis of calls from children and young people
to their confidential phone line which is provided by the NSPCC.
Casenotes include information on: What boys talk to childline about; children talking about family
relationship problems; bullying ; sexual abuse; sexual orientation and homopophobic bullying.

Children and Young People Experiencing Domestic Abuse - A Survey of Support Services
in West Dunbartonshire
The Violence Against Women Partnership and the Reduce Abuse Project conducted a series of
interviews with support services and women and children who had experienced domestic abuse in
West Dunbartonshire. This report contains useful information on domestic abuse and its impact on
children and young people as well as national and local approaches to the issue.

Teen Abuse Postcard - Available from the Reduce Abuse Project
S2 pupils in Clydebank High designed the postcard after they participated in classes about teen
domestic abuse. The postcard contains information on abusive behaviours as well as support
information for teenagers who may be experiencing abuse in their relationship. The Postcard is available
by contacting the Reduce Abuse Project.
Challenging Homophobia Together – A toolkit designed to raise awareness of homophobia
and homophobic bullying in Scottish schools
This toolkit was developed by LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) Youth Scotland and
funded by the Scottish Government. Copies of the toolkit have been distributed to all Scottish Schools.
It aims to raise awareness with pupils and staff, to encourage pupils to support each other and to
challenge homophobia and to encourage schools to develop an inclusive and positive approach to LGBT pupils.

Sexual Bullying – name it and shame it - Available from the Reduce Abuse Project
A pack developed by the Reduce Abuse Project for use in schools, and encourages discussion on
gender-based and homophobic bullying. The pack contains lesson plans and supporting materials for
teachers or staff to help them to raise the issue of sexual bullying with young people. It also contains
a DVD made by pupils in Dumbarton Academy on sexual bullying.
Intimate Partner Violence
The NSPC has commissioned two important pieces of research into young people’s attitudes and experiences of
intimate partner violence. Conducted by Christine Barter et al they include startling statistics of young people’s attitudes
towards violence and abuse in relationships as well as quotes from those who have experience of unhealthy and abusive
relationships.

NSPCC fact sheet about sexual bullying. It includes a definition of sexual bullying and useful links to research
carried out in this area.
Support information
Both Women’s Aid groups have family workers who offer support to children and young people affected by domestic abuse.
This service can be accessed by phone and workers arrange to offer support in school or another convenient location.
