Elections to the European Parliament are coming up on 4 June 2009.
The European Parliament deals with the big issues which concern all of us - such as global warming, migration and security of energy supply - but also smaller issues which affect us directly, such as lowering the cost of mobile phone calls in Europe or making airlines which overbook pay compensation to travellers.
European funding supports many local projects which have a direct effect on our communities and our family life.
Did you know that the redevelopment of Clydebank College was funded by the European Parliament - or that the Swan Canal redevelopment was made possible by an EU grant?
All 27 member states of the European Union (EU) will vote in June 2009 to elect their Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Scotland will elect 6 MEPs to be its voice in Europe. All six will represent the whole of Scotland. They will represent you. The European Parliament has powers in a wide range of areas affecting all member countries.
These include:
• workers’ rights
• regional economic development
• consumer rights
• international trade
• the environment
• animal rights
