General Election 2010 Thursday 6 May 2010

A UK parliamentary General Election will be held on Thursday 6 May 2010. If you want to vote in the General Election you must be listed on the electoral register, the list of everyone who is registered to vote. You are not automatically registered even if you pay council tax.

It is easier to vote than you think. As long as you are registered to vote, there is nothing to stop you voting in the General Election. If you are unable to vote in person due to a holiday, an illness or a disability, you may be eligible for a proxy vote and you can nominate another person to cast your vote on your behalf.

Registration has now closed for candidate nominations. It is now also too late to register to vote or to apply for a postal vote or an ordinary proxy vote at this election.  However, in cases of unforeseen illness, it may be possible to obtain an emergency proxy vote up until 5pm on polling day, 6 May.  Contact the Electoral Registration Office on freephone 0800 980 0471 for more information.

If you have registered to vote you can check your poll card for where to vote or phone us on 0800 587 3905.

Polling places will be open from 7am to 10pm.
