Councillor Geoff Calvert to retire

Councillor Geoff Calvert has announced his decision to retire on 27 January, 2012 after nearly 17 years as a local elected member.

Following the successful sale of his Dumbarton home he will now be moving with his wife to Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway.

Geoff has thanked Council officers saying: “I believe that you serve our communities exceptionally well and I wish you, your families and all members of your teams every health, happiness and success for the future. We may not always have seen eye to eye but as long as we have put the interests of the people we serve above our own, we are doing the right thing.”

Chief Executive Joyce White commented: “Despite knowing for some time that Geoff planned not to stand again for Council following his election in 2007 we are still sorry to see him retire. No one can doubt the commitment and effort he has put into representing his community over the past 16 years and in particular the important contribution he has made to West Dunbartonshire’s Licensing Board. On behalf of all Council officersI would like to wish him well for the future.”

Leader of the Council Ronnie McColl would also like to wish Geoff and his family the very best for the future and recognises the important role he has played at West Dunbartonshire Council over the years, and that he is one of only two of the Elected Members who has been in post since the reorganisation in 1995.

Since Councillor Calvert’s retirement comes within six months of the ordinary Council elections planned in May 2012 there is no need for a by-election and the position will remain vacant until that time.
