16th December 2009

Christie Park Primary pupil Khaira McGlashan has beaten over 500 other entrants to scoop the top prize in West Dunbartonshire Council’s Road Safety Calendar Competition.

10-year-old Khaira’s design uses humour to challenge drivers to think about the speed they are driving at.‘DON’T BE A CLOWN – SLOW RIGHT DOWN!’ will feature on the 2010 Road Safety Calendar, which is distributed to all schools, council offices, community education centres, libraries and health centres.

Primary 7 pupil Khaira was presented with her award and trophy on Tuesday 15th December by Councillor William Hendrie, Convener of Housing, Environmental and Economic Development.  Headteacher of Christie Park Primary, Laura Penny, was also presented with the Calendar Competition’s school trophy.

Fellow pupils from Christie Park Primary, Rachel Goldie and Abbie Gallagher (Primary 5) and Erin Denny and Alistair Baird (Primary 7), will also receive Highly Commended awards for their designs.

Councillor Hendrie said: “I really love Khaira’s design as it sends out a clear message that only a clown would risk lives by speeding. It is also a very bold, colourful and eyecatching picture by a very talented girl.”

The winning entry and all Highly Commended entries will be on display at the libraries throughout West Dunbartonshire in the first few months of 2010, and will also be on the plasma screens in Dumbarton Library and Clydebank Library.
