Glass recycling pilot set to get under way

Tuesday 9th February 2010

Clydebank residents will be the first in West Dunbartonshire to benefit from a glass recycling collection, thanks to a pilot scheme set to get under way next month.

Greenlight Environmental has received funding to provide the trial glass collection scheme in partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council from March onwards. The scheme will cover the Duntocher, Hardgate, Faifley, Whitecrook, Drumry and Linnvale areas of Clydebank.

Residents will be provided with a small 40 litre box for the collection of a large variety of glass bottles and jars such as wine, spirits and beer bottles, oil and vinegar bottles, medicine and cosmetic bottles, coffee and jam jars, baby food jars and cooking sauce jars or bottles.

The boxes will not accept broken drinking glasses or window glass and will be collected from the kerbside on residents normal waste collection day on a fortnightly basis. It is hoped to recycle up to 700 tonnes of glass bottles and jars during the trial, which will end in April 2011.

Councillor Jim McElhill, the Council’s spokesperson for Environmental Services and Economic Development, said: “Over 10% of any household’s waste will be glass bottles and jars, and at the moment the Council relies on members of the public taking these items to nearby recycling points. This trial scheme will make recycling glass at the kerbside as easy as possible, which is great news.”

Full information on how to take part in the scheme will be provided to residents within the trial areas, when their recycling box is delivered to their home.

A series of walk-in information events will take place in February at the following venues:

Wednesday 17th February – 10am – 12am, Double L Centre, Westwood Quadrant, Linnvale

Thursday 18th February – 10am – 12am, Glenhead Centre, Duntiglennan Rd, Duntocher

Monday 22nd February – 2pm – 4pm, Skypoint Centre, Lennox Drive, Faifley
