Gritting Update

7th January 2010

Due to the extreme weather conditions  we have been experiencing, the Council’s salt supplies have been greatly reduced in the last week with over 1000 tonnes of salt being spread per week, 10 times the normal spread of around 100 tonnes, as winter maintenance staff have gritted around the clock to provide safe driving conditions.

12 adjacent Authorities - using the same supplier are in a similar position and cannot offer any assistance.

To ensure that we can continue to undertake priority gritting it will now be necessary to limit treatment to priority carriageway routes only, ensuring that our principal A & B class roads, bus routes, roads providing access to emergency service depots, hospital and roads with steep inclines are treated in the first instance.  All secondary road and footway routes may remain ungritted and we would warn all motorists to exercise extreme caution as many roads are likely to be icy.

The Council are doing everything they can to replenish salt stocks and to keep the roads as safe as possible.

You can contact the Council contact centre on 01389 738282 during office hours. You can contact Amey for the A82 on 0800 028 1414.
