Find out more about new recycling scheme

Monday 1st March 2010

West Dunbartonshire Council is running a series of public information events this month to help householders understand the forthcoming changes to their bin collections.

From Monday April 12th, households in Dumbarton, Renton, Vale of Leven, Bonhill, Balloch and Gartocharn will see an increase in the frequency of the collection of their recycling bins.

Under the new scheme, instead of monthly blue and brown bin collections, recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste will now be collected on alternate weeks.  Changes also include the introduction of a food waste recycling scheme using kitchen caddies to collect the food waste, which can then be placed in brown bins alongside garden waste. The range of materials that can be recycled in blue bins is also increasing to include drinks cartons such as Tetrapak.

Residents can drop in to any of the following events to find out more about how the scheme will work:

  • Brucehill Activity Centre, Ardoch Crescent – Mon 8th March, 1 – 3pm
  • Carman Centre, Main St, Renton – Tues 9th March, 6.30pm – 8.30pm

The new service will not affect residents who stay in flats and tenements, although these households will receive an enhanced recycling service in the coming months. A recycling guide will be delivered to all affected homes before the new service starts, with full details of how and what to recycle plus the revised collection dates.

Councillor Jim McElhill, the Council’s spokesperson for Environmental Services and Economic Development, said: “It is estimated that once the scheme is fully implemented, 6000 extra tonnes of waste could be recycled per year which will help the Council avoid paying millions of pounds in Landfill Tax charges.  It will also of course help to prevent waste, preserve the planet’s natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
