Making An Exhibition Of Themselves

3rd March 2010

Hot on the Heels of an “Awards for All” grant of £3,200, the Faifley Art Group have put on a very different type of show at The Backdoor Gallery in Dalmuir Library, from their usual exhibitions!

Having just opened their doors on February 19th and running until March 20th, President of the Faifley Art Group, retired Staff Nurse, Christine Smith, 64, from Hardgate, explains how this long established Art Group has moved into a new phase of development: “This exhibition marks the culmination of a beneficial and enjoyable year, who thanks to our ‘Awards for All’ grant, made it possible for us to finance a tutor, Tom Walsh and also be able to buy and experiment using new materials, and with Tom’s encouragement and direction we have many different styles on display this year.”

With 21 regular members in the group, some working in oils, pastels, watercolours and acrylics with a rich variety of styles at both beginners and at a professional level, the group get together every Wednesday morning at Skypoint in Faifley and develop their skills as artists.

“Faifley Art Group is a really social group and although initially having bonded through our artistic endeavours, it’s a great bunch of people that really enjoy each others company, explains Christine. I began painting only 9 years ago with ILA assistance for a Glasgow University beginner’s class and I just loved it!”

“Tutor, Tom Walsh has really pushed our development this year, encouraging us to experiment with different media and ways of working which has produced a really interesting sculpture piece in metal, about a foot high of big fish eating smaller fish. You should see it!”

Backdoor Gallery is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am – 5pm and on Tuesday from 1.30pm – 8pm and Saturday from  10am – 1pm.
