30th November 2009
West Dunbartonshire Violence Against Women Partnership (WDVAWP) is running a programme of events to promote the 16 days of Action for the elimination of Violence Against Women and White Ribbon Day 2009.
16 Days of Action aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse, childhood sexual abuse, and commercial sexual exploitation by working in partnership with other agencies.
Events will run from 25 November to 10 December and will include a performance by Patricia Byrne who was nominated for an Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2008 for her play, Don’t Say A Word. This powerful portrayal of one woman’s journey to freedom also challenges the myths around why women choose to live with domestic abuse.
Community artist, Susan Steell will visit Dumbarton Academy where pupils have created a triptych portable mural. The mural will illustrate young people’s impressions of gender through teen magazines and will tour secondary schools in the area during lunchtimes for pupils to view. A white ribbon stall will also tour secondary schools providing students access to information on sexual bullying, teen dating abuse and local support.
The SILK (Survivors, Independence, Legislative and Knowledge) group will be presenting an historical overview of Women’s Suffrage and the Glasgow women’s Suffragette Movement from 1909 to 2009 in Scotland by Anni Donaldson of West Dunbartonshire Violence Against Women Partnership.
A series of training workshops are also being held, covering childhood sexual abuse, the effects of domestic abuse of children and young people and coming of age in a porn culture.
Please note some events must be booked in advance, please contact Carol Young on 01389 738680 to reserve a place.
