Council seeks three local ambassadors for Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

Tuesday 30th March 2010

West Dunbartonshire Council is looking for 3 local ambassadors to represent West Dunbartonshire and take part in the Closing Ceremony of the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games in October in the Glasgow 2014 Handover Ceremony.

Nominations are now open to all adults living in West Dunbartonshire who regularly make a contribution to their local community through volunteering in active, cultural or sporting activities that have no professional dance or drama experience - to perform at the handover segment of the Closing Ceremony.

The lucky 3 West Dunbartonshire ambassadors will travel for free and perform alongside hundreds of cast members who are being sourced from dance groups, sports clubs and organisations from across the country.

Glasgow 2014 aims to use this investment in communities across Scotland to establish a network of people who will be motivated by the life changing experience of being involved

in the Delhi 2010 Flag Handover. This network will then develop the knowledge and understanding to inspire others in their local area to become ambassadors for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Handover Ceremony marks the Flag Handover from Delhi to Glasgow, and includes an 8 minute creative programme to showcase Glasgow and Scotland to the rest of the world.  The performance, which will involve a mass choreographed dance routine, will take place in the spectacular Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and will host a capacity crowd of 60,000 for the Closing Ceremony. The performance will be beamed live across the Commonwealth to an estimated audience of 1 billion people.

Convenor for Education and Lifelong Learning, Councillor May Smillie explains:

What an opportunity of a lifetime, to have your travel paid to go India, to perform at a historic, international sports event in Delhi, watched by millions of people from around the world and have been chosen to represent your country!

“ We need to find 3 very special ambassadors, from West Dunbartonshire who truly deserve this for all they have contributed to their community, to make that journey and be proud to represent West Dunbartonshire and for West Dunbartonshire to be proud of them!”

Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive John Scott said:

“We want adults of all ages, abilities and backgrounds from across Scotland to be part of this historic event in Delhi this October, where a cast of hundreds from across Scotland will perform in front of 60,000 people and a global television audience of one billion.

“We particularly want people who invest time and effort into their community through volunteering, particularly in the 17 sports that will form our Commonwealth Games programme, to be part of the cast.  You don’t need to have previous dance or drama experience – just visit http://www.wdcweb.info/delhinomination/
