Cycle friendly award for two Dumbarton Primaries

Wednesday 19th May 2010

Two Dumbarton primary schools are celebrating becoming Cycle Friendly Schools.

Knoxland Primary and Dalreoch Primary received their Cycle Friendly Awards from Catherine Tonner, assistant Road Safety Officer at West Dunbartonshire Council, last week. They are only the second and third primary schools in the area to gain the award, after Linnvale Primary became the first Cycle Friendly School in West Dunbartonshire in March.

The award scheme, run by Cycling Scotland, aims to promote cycling as part of the whole school culture and increase the number of pupils and staff cycling on all journeys, and especially the school journey.

Schools assess just how cycle friendly their school is under three headings - infrastructure, promotion and incentives.  All the staff and pupils at Knoxland Primary School and Dalreoch Primary School have worked extremely hard to raise the profile of cycling within the school and to encourage more cycling on the school journey.

Cllr Jim McElhill, the Council’s spokesperson for Environmental Services & Economic Development, said: “Cycling is fun, healthy, practical, inexpensive and good for the environment. More children walking and cycling to and from school will help to reduce the congestion around schools and will also give children important opportunities to practise their road user skills.  Many of our schools also participate in the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme, providing children with the knowledge and skills required for using their bikes safely for journeys.”
