Don't be caught out by bogus Council Tax calls

Friday 16th July 2010

West Dunbartonshire Council is advising local residents not to be caught out by bogus callers pretending to be Council workers.

The Council has become aware of bogus telephone calls being made to council tax payers across Scotland. The caller tells the resident that they are due a council tax rebate going back to 1993, as they have been paying council tax on the incorrect band.

The caller then goes on to ask for the resident’s bank details to enable the Council to make a direct payment of the rebate money directly into their bank account.

The Council’s convener for Corporate Services, Councillor Craig McLaughlin said:

“I’d like to remind local people that the Council never phones residents looking for their bank details in relation to council tax banding enquiries. If you receive one of these phone calls, it is not a genuine call from the Council and should be reported immediately.”

If you receive a bogus call such as this, please call the Council’s Contact Centre on 01389 738282, who will then inform the Police.
