Dumbarton Academy sweeps the board!

Monday 21st June 2010

Dumbarton Academy swept the board at the Scottish Final for Young Enterprise Scotland Award, at Hampden Park earlier this week for their educational board game “Dae Ye Ken?”

Talented, entrepreneurial Dumbarton Academy 6th year pupils won ‘Best Company’, ‘Best Presentation’, ‘Best Company Report’ and ‘Best Overall Company 2010’ for their own company – the “Super Amazing Ginger Company”.

West Dunbartonshire Council’s Director for Educational Services, Terry Lanagan says: "This is a fantastic and well deserved achievement for Dumbarton Academy.

'Dae Ye Ken' is an imaginative, educational and beautifully designed board game which is also great fun to play. In addition, the young people involved have shown very high level entrepreneurial skills in marketing the game within and beyond West Dunbartonshire.

I wish to express my sincere congratulations to all involved in this Young Enterprise project."

Delighted Headteacher, Graham Hutton said, “We are absolutely thrilled that the Super Amazing Ginger Company won the Scottish finals, with their product, a Scottish educational board game Dae Ye Ken?, which is based around Scottish culture.

Andrew Grindlay, Catriona MacQueen, Heather Reid, Nicola Dalrymple, Ciorstan McGregor, Marc Bryce, Ashley MacIntyre, Colin Devlin, Ross Collins, Craig Devereux, Steven Stewart, Callum Runciman, Emily Kirkwood, Ross Heaney, Suzie Webster, Abbey Fleming and Bryan Millar formed a dedicated group of young people who are confident, successsful, effective and responsible.  With the support from Business Adviser Paul Sheerin of Polaroid and link teachers Alan Rodgers and Carol Cook, they have created their own success - a fantastic achievement.   We are extremely proud of these young people and wish them further success as they represent Scotland in the UK Young Enterprise Finals in London in July.”

The dedicated group of 6th year pupils from Dumbarton Academy, are keen to stress that the board game has been designed to be fun as well as educational and is aimed at school children between the ages of 11 and 16.  The game provides them with an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of Scottish geography, history, culture and heritage, either individually or as a team.

The group has worked hard to raise money to produce the game, by arranging bake sales and discos and it looks like their work has been worth it. “We are really pleased with the interest we have had so far and have sold even more than we thought we would’, said Andrew Grindlay, one of the enterprising teenagers.

The ‘Dae Ye Ken CD Standard Grade CD Question Pack’is used in conjunction with the ‘Dae Ye Ken’ board game and is an ideal way to study for exams, combining fun with learning. The students made up all the questions themselves after being through the Standard Grade exams already and think most students would agree it is a more exciting way to study.

A number of the students would now like to study business at college or university, as creating the game has given them a useful insight into how to manage a business.

Dumbarton Academy entrepreneurs are selling the board game, a cd-rom, mugs and jam jars.  The board game and dvd can also be bought online at www.daeyeken.com
