Dumbarton pupils to give special preview of international festival performance

Event: Glasgow MELA Festival 2011 / Pre WDC Commonwealth Games Handover performance
Venue:  St Peter’s Primary School, Dumbarton
Date & Time: Tue 5th Oct 2010 / 2.15 – 2.45pm

Pupils from St Peter’s Primary School in Dumbarton, along with Singing Music Motivator Tommy Regan, are all set to give a very special performance of some newly written Scottish / Indian themed Singing Games to an invited panel of guests next week.

Tuesday’s performance was set up both to highlight how these Singing Games can promote Health and Wellbeing themes, and as a preview to the West Dunbartonshire Commonwealth Games Handover Event on October 14th.

Harminder Berman, from Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games Handover group and Glasgow MELA International Festival, will be one of Tuesday’s guests. He is keen to promote a live performance of the Singing Games by a group of West Dunbartonshire primary school pupils as part of the 2011 Glasgow MELA Festival.

The Glasgow MELA Festival has been a favourite on the cultural calendar for almost 20 years, growing into a massive outdoor extravaganza of music, dance and entertainment which last year attracted crowds of more than 25,000.

West Dunbartonshire’s Singing Music Motivator, Tommy Regan said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity for a group of our local primary school pupils - a chance to sing and perform at an international event to a potentially massive audience.”

Tuesday’s performance also serves as a pre-event “taster” for the forthcoming FREE West Dunbartonshire Commonwealth Games Handover event on Thursday 14th October at the Play Drome Sport and Leisure Centre, Clydebank from 2.30 – 5.30pm. This event will celebrate the official handover of the Commonwealth Games from Delhi to Glasgow. The theme will be Sport, Music, Dance and Culture, featuring Scottish and Asian artists and athletes.

Music will be provided by Tommy Reilly, fresh from the summer festivals, including T in the Park and T4 On the Beach, as well as a UK and U.S tour itinerary. Also on the bill are Glasgow-based AWAZ FM DJ/MC, dancers and live Dhol drummers with a blend of modern and traditional Asian dance, music and percussion.

There will also be a special performance by ‘The Box’ from the acclaimed ‘The Fusion and the Box’, as seen on ‘BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT,’ to provide another dance performance to remember. The renowned ‘Celtic Spirit’ will also perform live at the event to add a true taste of Scotland, with highland drums and pipes.

In addition, the St Peter’s Primary School pupils will perform their Singing Games live on stage. There will also be a celebration of sports stars of the past and future, including athletes who have performed and won at previous Commonwealth Games, and others who hope to win in the 2014 Games.Large scale screens will also beam back the live handover from Delhi to the audience and performers.

The event on 14 October is part of an EventScotland and Scottish Government-launched ‘Games for Scotland’ programme, designed to engage communities throughout Scotland in the lead up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and to raise awareness of the Handover Ceremony taking place during the closing Ceremony of this year’s Delhi Commonwealth Games. All of Scotland’s 32 local authorities will be involved, with many events coinciding with the Delhi Handover.

Paul Bush, of EventScotland said: “We are delighted that West Dunbartonshire is part of our Games for Scotland programme. West Dunbartonshire’s Commonwealth Handover is an exciting event, which demonstrates just how proud people in Scotland are to be hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It’s a fantastic example of West Dunbartonshire’s contribution to making Scotland the perfect stage for events.”
