Provost Agnew said: “I am delighted that local Cast Members Ross, Jennifer and Laura will be representing West Dunbartonshire, performing in front of a capacity crowd of 60,000 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi. We are all very excited about the challenge that lies ahead for them and I am sure they will make us all proud.”
Laura Young, Cast Membersaid, “It’s quite overwhelming to think that the performance will be beamed live across the Commonwealth to an estimated audience of 1 billion people. We are all bursting to see how the performance will take shape and find out exactly what we will be doing. We think Bootcamp will be amazing! There are 346 people from all over Scotland that we will be rehearsing and performing with. We can’t wait to meet them all!”
The Flag Handover Ceremony on October 14 is the event that concludes the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. It will be the first public statement to the world that Glasgow will be the next Host City, inviting the world to Glasgow in 2014. The Closing Ceremony will be broadcast in the UK on BBC2 from 2.30pm, with the Flag Handover Ceremony starting at approximately 3.30pm.
Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive John Scott explained how the Cast Members were chosen. He said:“We deliberately developed an innovative recruitment model that would ensure that people from a range of communities and diverse backgrounds from all over Scotland would have the opportunity of a lifetime to proudly represent Scotland as part of the 346-strong Cast who will perform the eight minute performance.
“Glasgow Life, who has managed the project, worked closely with existing Scottish education, sports, arts and volunteering networks to recruit the Cast Members. This wasn’t the easiest route to take, but it was the one with the greatest potential to create a once in a lifetime opportunity for people from across Scotland. After the Handover Ceremony, cast members will become Ambassadors for the Games in their community, and will be involved with the Games for the next four years, leaving a positive and direct legacy that is Scotland-wide.”
Sara Donaldson, Strategic Director of Unspun, the internationally renowned, world-class team appointed to develop and deliver the Ceremony, explains:
“This is the first time that a recruitment model of this kind has been developed for such a high profile event. Glasgow 2014 was determined from the start that the Ceremony would involve as many people in Scotland as was feasibly possible. Our world class choreographers are going to take 346 Scots, some of whom have never danced before, and turn them into stars. The entire creative concept has been based upon the people of Scotland, showcasing Scotland ‘s proud culture and unique personality to the world.”
