Residents urged to step up their recycling efforts

Monday 5th April 2010

Residents in parts of West Dunbartonshire are being urged to raise their recycling game as their new and improved kerbside recycling scheme gets under way next week.

From next Monday (April 12th), households in Dumbarton, Renton, Vale of Leven, Bonhill, Balloch and Gartocharn will be able to recycle more of their household waste than ever before. Instead of monthly blue and brown bin collections, recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste will now be collected on alternate weeks.

Residents will also now be able to recycle their food waste with the help of their new kitchen caddy. The caddy can be used to collect the food waste, which can then be placed in brown bins alongside garden waste. The range of materials that can be recycled in blue bins is also increasing to include drinks cartons such as Tetrapak.

The new service will not affect residents who stay in flats and tenements, although these households will receive an enhanced recycling service in the coming months.

Councillor Jim McElhill, the Council’s spokesperson for Environmental Services and Economic Development, explained: “If you live in one of the affected areas, you should now have received a kitchen caddy for collecting your food waste, a recycling guide that explains what can be recycled, and a collection calendar to let you know your bin collection day. Make sure you check this carefully as it might have changed.”

He added: “For the sake of the planet, we all need to recycle more. The Council could also end up paying millions in Landfill Tax if we don’t meet our recycling targets. These extra collections mean there will be more space in your brown and blue bins to fill with recyclable waste. But that will only work if people raise their game and make an effort to separate their recyclable waste from their non-recyclable waste.

“I’d urge the people of West Dunbartonshire to get right behind our recycling efforts and help West Dunbartonshire become a greener place that’s an example to other local authorities.”

It has been estimated that once the scheme is fully implemented, 6000 extra tonnes of waste could be recycled per year.
