Summer Leavers Event at Dumbarton Football Club

29th April 2010

Film, drama and action were all part of a massively successful School Leavers’ bash thrown for 400 young people last Thursday at Dumbarton Football Club. The Bash was for  teenagers from secondary schools in West Dunbartonshire invited  by West Dunbartonshire Council and Skills Development Scotland as part of the More choices, More Chances Strategy.

Designed to encourage young people to think about the variety of opportunities available to them when they leave school, they watched a short film and play aimed at increasing their awareness of post school opportunities and support to access them.

Radio Clyde DJ and accomplished motivational speaker. Gina McKie, spoke with great enthusiasm to all young people about her own life experiences, aspirations and encouraged

Gina McKie
everyone to believe in their own abilities and to make the most of the day and take full opportunity of all the colleges and apprenticeship market stalls hosted by a range of local employment and training organisations and colleges.

There was a free prize draw with an iPod up for grabs at the event - though no-one went home empty handed as bags of information and goody’s were given to all participants.

West Dunbartonshire Council’s More Chances More Choices Officer, Hugh Neil said, “I am delighted with the turnout and the success of the event. One of our key aims is to really boost the confidence of the kids to consider all the opportunities that they have and to believe in themselves enough to be willing to give something a try. Gina McKie was quite inspirational with our young folk and really hammered home that you have to believe in yourself and face the fear and do it anyway… just do it!”
