Urgent demolition of St Andrew's High School

Friday 4th June 2010

Following a serious arson attack at the former St Andrew’s High school building on Wednesday, 2 June, West Dunbartonshire Council has instructed the urgent demolition of the building.

An inspection by Building Standards officers who visited the site have declared the buildings are dangerous and should be demolished immediately.

Reigart Contracts Ltd took possession of the site today, Friday, 4 June to immediately make the area safe and secure and to commence demolition works with immediate effect.

Any unauthorised persons entering the building continued to be a major concern and in recognition of the fact that there is a resultant increased danger to life and property, the Chief Executive has invoked his delegated authority to appoint the demolition contractor with immediate effect.

Since the building has been vacant there have been several incidents of vandalism with the latest arson attack resulting in considerable damage which has compromised the structural integrity of parts of the building. Council Officers sought and received approval from the Chief Executive Officer to proceed to appoint the lowest tender in order that the demolition works could be commenced at the earliest opportunity.

This speedy reaction to mitigate the potential dangers has been the result of excellent interaction between Education and Officers from Architectural Services, Property Maintenance and also the Planning section from within the Council.
