West Dunbartonshire Council is appealing for local people to take advantage of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help attract major funding to restore the much-loved Dalmuir Park in Clydebank.
West Dunbartonshire Council successfully submitted a stage one application to the Heritage Lottery Fund in August 2009 for the restoration of Dalmuir Park, and was awarded £11,700 towards developing a final stage two application for submission in February 2011.
If the stage two application is successful, the overall project budget will be £1.4million to be spent over three years, with work commencing in September 2011.
The restoration project will include renovation of the duck pond, upgrading fencing, providing additional recreation facilities, restoration of heritage features, installation of street lighting and CCTV, new signage and interpretation and landscaping improvements.
Revenue funding will be made available to employ a Community Education park ranger, two park wardens and two apprentice gardeners. The Community Education park ranger will work with community groups to increase the range of people using the park by organising a wide range of activities throughout the year.
The Council’s spokesperson for Environmental Services, Councillor Jim McElhill, explained: “The Heritage Lottery Fund will only fund projects that can show a strong and active partnership between the local authority and the community. Therefore, a “Friends of Dalmuir Park” group has been set up comprising of council officers and local community representatives. This group will take a lead role in developing an activity plan and management plan, to be submitted with the stage two funding application.
“During July and August, Council officers have been carrying out a community engagement process aimed at informing and involving the wider community in the project. This will give everyone an opportunity to shape the future of Dalmuir Park.”
