The Rainbow Flag will fly at West Dunbartonshire Council headquarters throughout the month of February, in support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month.
The flag highlights the Council’s commitment to creating an inclusive and equal environment for people living and working in the area.
Provost Denis Agnew and Councillor Marie McNair, who is Chair of WDC’s Equality and Diversity Working Group, raised the Rainbow Flag this morning at the Council Offices at Garshake Rd, Dumbarton, and a flag will also fly at the Council’s offices at Rosebery Place in Clydebank.
Provost Agnew said: “This is the fifth year that the Council has flown the Rainbow Flag to support LGBT history month. The Rainbow Flag reminds us that ours is a diverse community, composed of people with a variety of individual tastes of which we should all be proud.
“It’s completely unacceptable that in this day and age, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people still experience discrimination because of their sexuality or gender identity. By flying the rainbow flag, the Council is sending out a clear message that discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated here.”
Councillor Marie McNair said “It is important to me as an elected member that this kind of political and public support takes place. It sends out a clear message that we are committed to the LGBT community.
“The flag is the internationally recognised symbol of freedom and equality. It pleases me that we have ensured that the flag has flown over our civic buildings for the last four years and long may this continue. The message is clear. Our LGBT citizens must have the same rights and respect as everyone else in our community.”
The LGBT history month, which is held annually, celebrates the diverse history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.
