Work begins on first new Council houses in 23 years

Work has started to demolish derelict flats on Miller Road, Haldane and pave the way for the construction of the first new Council housing in West Dunbartonshire for 23 years.

The demolition is due to be completed by March and it is hoped the 15 new houses will be ready for rent in Spring 2013.

West Dunbartonshire Council announced last year, their plans to build 75 new council houses after securing £2,250,000 from the Scottish Government’s Innovation and Investment Fund.

The houses in the heart of the Haldane will consist of four semi detached houses, five terraced houses and six cottage flats.

Councillor William Hendrie, Convenor for Housing, said: “I am excited that this project is underway so quickly. After being an eyesore on the local area for a number of years it is reassuring for local residents to see real progress being made as these derelict flats are pulled down. We are committed to provide good quality modern homes for our residents and this phase is just the start of 75 new council houses in West Dunbartonshire.”

“The Haldane is a key regeneration site for the Council and so this investment is going exactly where we need it most. The location of the new homes opposite the local primary school is ideal, and I have no doubt there will be high demand for these new properties.”

Residents have welcomed the demolition of the flats which have been derelict for years and in the past attracted antisocial behaviour.

The Council has appointed Cube Housing to manage the project along with Cruden Homes which will bring employment stability to many employees who are also resident in West Dunbartonshire.

The Council hopes to start work in the near future at the other two sites within their new build programme in Clydebank and Dumbarton.
