Members of the Council’s Educational Services Committee are set to consider plans to build a new £15.1m Renton Primary School and invest £850,000 extensively refurbishing St Mary’s Primary in Alexandria.

A report, which will be presented to the Educational Services Committee on 7 March, proposes building a new Renton Primary and a Language and Communication Base, accommodating pupils with Additional Support Needs. The new campus, incorporating a new Riverside Early Learning and Childcare Centre, would be built on the grounds of the current school.

Members will also consider upgrading and improving St Mary’s Primary School in Alexandria. Works would include an extension to accommodate a new internal kitchen and dining area,, replacing a temporary dining room located outwith the school building.. The school would benefit from a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) hub offering children essential skills for future modern careers and the proposals also include a new external state of the art Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for outdoor sports.

Following feedback received over the last three weeks from parents and carers at St Martin's Primary, the school has not been included in this proposal. It is intended to further engage with the school community with a view to bringing a report to a future meeting of the committee.

Laura Mason, Chief Education Officer, said: “These plans have been developed to enhance teaching and learning opportunities for pupils and improve learning environments for children and staff in Renton and Alexandria.

“Renton Primary building is in a poor condition and the layout does not meet the needs of today’s teaching practices.  It is recognised that St Mary's Primary requires upgrading to enhance and extend the facilities. It will be for the committee to consider the best way forward."
