Additional Support Needs

West Dunbartonshire Council is committed to the basic principle set out in the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (1990), that all rights apply to all children without exception.  These basic rights include non-discrimination and equality of access to education.

The Additional Support for Learning (Scotland) 2004 Act places a duty on Education Services to ensure that all children and young people are provided with the support they require to help them to benefit from school (including pre-school) education.

Lynn Townsend

Promoting inclusion in Education Services is a long term and challenging aim, but one which is driven by both national and local priorities.  It involves including children in the most appropriate but lease restrictive environments; supporting teachers in their work with pupils with a wide range of additional support needs; and supporting parents and children through integrated children’s services in line with the Community Authority vision.  The key is to build the capacity of universal services while maintaining good quality specialist, targeted resources where they are required.

Strategic management of provision for children with additional support needs is provided by a small centrally based team whose focus is to plan and support the delivery of policies and services for children with Additional Support Needs and their families.

The team is led by: Lynn Townsend, Head of Service.
Managed by: Mary Berrill, Quality Improvement Manager (Support Services).

Supported by: Margaret Connolly, Principal Educational Psychologist.

Team members are: Debbie Queen, Head Teacher Additional Support Needs
Vicky McGraw, Quality Improvement Officer (pupil support)

Gerry Neal, Child Protection Officer.

Patricia Montgomery, Quality Improvement Officer (pupil support)
