West Dunbartonshire Council is committed to the idea that all children have fundamental human rights that include equality of access to education and non-discrimination.
These rights come from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which was adopted in 1989. The Convention is legally binding and applies to all children under 18.
In West Dunbartonshire we promote an inclusive approach. This is a long term and challenging aim which includes:
-
making sure that children attend the most appropriate and supportive educational environment
-
supporting teachers in their work with children and young people with additional support needs
-
supporting parents through our work with integrated children’s services
In Scotland, we have legislation to support children and young people who have additional support needs, the Additional Support for Learning (Scotland) Acts of 2004 and 2009.
These Acts place duties on Educational Services to provide support for children and young people with additional support needs so that they can benefit fully from pre-school and school education.
These web pages provide information about how West Dunbartonshire addresses these additional needs.
