Rights Respecting Schools

In a Rights Respecting School, with the values of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child as part of the values system of the school, children learn the following:

  • the difference between wants and needs

  • needs equals rights

  • my rights are also your rights

  • rights bring responsibilities for adults and for children

  • if children have a right to be protected from conflict, cruelty, exploitation and neglect, then they also have a responsibility not to bully or harm each other

A Rights Respecting School is where:

  • everyone learns to use the language of rights, respect and responsibility

  • adults model RR behaviour and language

  • children become aware of their own identity

  • children learn to promote justice and to challenge injustice and inequality

  • children gain a powerful voice for good in their community
