Human Rights and Equal Opportunities

Human rights and the promotion of equality are two of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century. Two new commissions have been set up to help meet the challenge.

Across the UK there is the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). This Commission was formed from the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Commission for Racial Equality and the Disability Rights Commission. The Commission is chaired by Trevor Phillips with Morag Alexander as the Scottish Commissioner.

Existing alongside the EHRC is the Scottish Commission for Human Rights (SCHR), chaired by Professor Alan Miller, to deal with devolved aspects of human rights.

These two separate organisations, working closely together, will have an increasing impact on such everyday concerns such as health, education, care of the elderly, social services and the organisations providing these services. Both Commissions will work to ensure that Scots are aware of their rights and to explain the duties on public bodies.

The promotion of equality and human rights is increasingly seen as a responsibility for everyone in society - and employers, schools, the NHS and other public bodies have human rights and equalities duties to all those who use their services.

In West Dunbartonshire we welcome these duties and endeavour to provide a working and learning environment which is free from unfair discrimination and which will enable staff and students to fulfil their personal potential. The aim of equity in education is to improve educational and social outcomes for children and young people by creating an ethos that values diversity and promotes equal opportunities for achievement for all within climate of high expectations.

West of Scotland Racial Equality Centre has provided experiences of young people in meeting and dealing with different types of discrimination. Read extracts from their booklet The Dignity of Difference and A Celebration of Our Roots.
