The Dignity of Difference

Just like me

At nursery we learn to see

The similarities in you and me

From every corner of the earth

North and south

We all have two eyes, two ears,

A nose and mouth

No matter what your colour or race may be

Everyone can have a happy smiling face

Like me!

Why me?
Why me, who has to be hurt inside?
Drawing of a girl and boy
Best friends

I'm a girl you're a boy
We're still friends

I'm tall you're small
We're still friends

I've got blue eyes you've got brown eyes
We're still friends

I've got light hair you've got dark
We're still friends

I'm Scottish you're Indian
We're still friends

I've got white skin you've got brown skin
We're still friends

Everybody is different in some way.

Why me, who wants to do girls things?
Why me, who likes to sing?
Why me, who loves to dance?
Why me, who is the one that's broken at the end of the day?
But right deep inside is the worst thing,
Right deep inside I feel nothing.
No love, no pain,
Just an empty heart
A pure empty heart
I can't help who I am .....

Discrimination

Discrimination is not nice
People really should think twice
Don't judge by gender, size or race
Think of the person behind the face

I got teased because of my size
I don't think that's very wide
People are big and people are small
Size should just not matter at all

Some are judged by the colour of their skin
But we must think of what lies within
Just like smarties although different outside
Everyone's the same inside

Sometimes men get paid more money
I don't think that's very funny
Men and women should get the same pay
That would be a much fairer way

Discrimination causes people to fight
We all know that that's not right
If we learn to tolerate
Living together will be great

Discrimination

People fighting, people crying
People shouting, people sighing
This racial state has warped the Nation
It is called discrimination
Families hide in pain and fear
Although help is very near
It's all hate that can be tamed
All this hurt and fiery flames
We need laughter, joy and goodness
Not pain and endless rudeness

The Dignity of Difference

Big heads, bullies they're all around just
Ignore them stand your ground
It doesn't matter if you're small or tall
Just remember you've got it all
It doesn't matter where you live if they
Call you names just say you don't give
It doesn't matter what they say, we're
All special in our own way
It doesn't matter if people say you're fat
Or thin just walk away, never give in
Being dignified, and ignoring the rest
That's what makes you the very best
And remember that being different is
What makes you cool that's why you rule!!!

My discrimination poem

When I was walking up to the Spar with my friend,

who was black, we got halfway then a group of teenagers came over and blocked the path. One of the teenagers said "you're not white so you can't go any further, only that girl can". (pointing at me) I could tell by looking at my friend that she was angry and sad at the same time. My friend said "please can I get by? I need to do this errand for my mother". Just before the teenagers spoke I knew they will never let her past. Then the teenager said "we would never let you past. I was sad but when I looked at my friend I could tell she didn't know what it meant, but she knew it wasn't nice. She was about to push them away but I stopped her and said "lets just leave; I don't want to get into any fighting". As we were walking back my friend didn't say anything but her face was still torn with anger. When we got home my friend told her mum how she couldn't get the things she needed. When I went to bed that night I was still feeling sad. I hope there is no discrimination left in the world as I get older.

My special sister

I am Monica, my older sister Sophie has got a learning disability, I experienced discrimination last year.

It began at 4.00pm when my sister got off the school bus. I looked out of the window and there was a gang of boys sitting on the wall, they weren't doing any harm so I walked to the door and opened it for Sophie, I heard shouting and whistling, I looked out to see the boys crowd round Sophie. I would have run to help, but the boys were older and bigger than me, so I shouted on my mum.

she know why I was calling on her as we have these problems every day. When mum appeared the gang opened up and let Sophie come in. My mum told them to leave; I was standing at the back of the room watching.

The boys eventually left but I could still hear sniggering and laughing. The boys are always waiting for Sophie coming off the bus now, so they can laugh at her.
