Parent Councils

Role of your parent council

The role of the parent council is to help the school run successfully.  So, the parent council will:

  1. support the school in its work with pupils

  2. represent the views of all parents

  3. encourage links between the school, parents, pupils, pre-school groups and the wider community

  4. report back to the Parent Forum; that is all parents of children at the school

This role will include supporting teachers and the school to improve education standards and quality at the school, through the curricular, social, cultural and recreational activities provided.

The parent council has an important role in keeping all parents informed and consulted with respect to school standards, policies, etc. Also, it will act as a way for parents views to be presented to headteachers and local authorities.

Finally, their role includes keeping members of the wider community who have an interest in the school involved, for example nurseries, libraries, local councillors, community representatives and the pupils themselves.

Who can be on a parent council?

The exact number of members of the parent council is variable but the following things are expected:

  • members will be parents of children at the school

  • a 'parent' is anyone with a parenting role for a pupil

  • the parent council chairperson must be a parent with children at the school

  • the headteacher has a right to attend all meetings

  • where appropriate, the local church can put forward a member

It may be useful to have staff members on the council and other people may be invited along to specific meetings, e.g. a community police officer to a meeting on road safety.
