Proud as punch Principal Teacher, Julie Cameron from Kilbowie Primary School in Clydebank was presented with the British Council International School Award at a prestigious award ceremony in London on October 16th by BBC Six O’clock News reader, George Alagaih.
The huge award ceremony also commemorated the 75th Anniversary of the British Council and the 10th Anniversary of the International School Award.
Awards were presented region by region starting with Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and then England. 711 schools received awards in total, with only 8 Scottish schools receiving an award.
Despite a very busy and well attended ceremony, Julie had a front row seat.
She said: “It was an honour to receive the award on behalf of the school, the pupils, staff and parents who had worked so hard to achieve this. Although I knew who George Alagiah was, I had never really avidly watched the 6 o'clock news. Since meeting him and listening to him speak about his own education and career I am now a big fan and try to catch the early evening news to see him. He was lovely and absolutely charming and really helped to make it such a great day.”
The certificate reads "Kilbowie Primary School has been accredited for outstanding development of the International Dimension in the curriculum".
Terry Lanagan, West Dunbartonshire Council’s Executive Director for Education said: “We are delighted that Kilbowie Primary School has become the first school in West Dunbartonshire to receive the prestigious British Council International School Award.”
Olga Stanojlovic, Director of Schools in Education, British Council said, “The Award is open to all schools throughout the UK and is designed to recognise, develop and celebrate best practice in the international dimensions of teaching and learning in the ethos and curriculum of the school. The school has links with other schools in Italy, Poland, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Turkey and submitted an excellent portfolio of evidence highlighting their range of international work and their commitment in supporting all of their young learners to become active global citizens and increase their knowledge of the larger world around them.”
“Many congratulations to all the school and the community who can take pride in the Award which is testament to all their hard work. The international dimensions of teaching and learning have always been at the heart of the work of the British Council, and 2009 is both the 75th anniversary of the Council and the 10th year of the Award so it is an extra-special ‘well done’ to Kilbowie.”
