Continuous Professional Development

The Department of Educational Services is committed to raising standards of attainment and achievement for all of our young people. We recognise the importance of the continuing professional development (CPD) of all staff to achieve this.

Training opportunities

A range of training opportunities will be offered to meet the differing needs of all school and centre staff. Activities will take place during the day, at the end of the day, and occasionally on Saturdays and holidays. These will be arranged centrally by the department and will add to the training provided by schools and centres.

Sharing good practice

This newly developed Sharing good practice section of the website will allow staff to access a range of examples of good practice, including new approaches to Curriculum for Excellence. This will help the sharing of information on successful teaching and learning.

Useful information

CPD Website

Courses have been organised by the department and are available on the West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) CPD Website. Applications for places on all courses are made through the site, following approval from your school or centre CPD coordinator.

Leadership

To support professional discussion, networking events have been planned to enable the sharing of good practice amongst leaders within schools and centres. Working with others, shadowing, observing, coaching and sharing ideas are all effective ways of improving leadership skills.

Aspiring head teachers can develop their skills and knowledge in school leadership and management by completing the Scottish Qualification for Headship.

Networks

We have a calendar of dates to allow staff to meet to network. These allow for the sharing of good practice, with a focus on Curriculum for Excellence.

Many staff attend networking events, a few are listed below:

  • subject principal teachers in secondary

  • chartered teachers

  • Scottish Qualification for Headship participants

  • mentors of students and probationers

  • cooperative learning champions

Teacher Induction Scheme

Teachers taking part in the national induction scheme in WDC are given mentoring support by the school and a broad range of courses, arranged by the department.

CPD Scotland

The CPD Scotland website from Learning and Teaching Scotland provides up to date national and local CPD news, new ideas, blogs and CPD forums. CPD Find is a database of CPD opportunities from providers all over Scotland and beyond. CPD Reflect is an on line tool to help you to self evaluate your practice and to plan, record and share your practice.

Training for Supply Teachers /Teachers in Years 2-6

Additional training opportunities have been organised to support teachers who are on temporary contracts and build on the induction year by developing teachers in years 2-6.

The Scottish Government have introduced an online community on Glow, called CPDStepIn, which provides additional support to teachers who are on short term contracts and unable to access CPD opportunities. This resource provides a discussion area, forum and web meeting tools, advice on professional review and development and free online CPD.
