Information for staff

The Scottish Government have produced documents which aim to provide teaching staff with information about assessment, standards, etc in the new curriculum.

These are accessible through the Learning and Teaching Scotland website on Building the Curriculum 5 - A framework for assessment, which provides links to the following Building the Curriculm 5 documents:

  • recognising achievement, profiling and reporting

  • applying and sharing standards
  • quality assurance and moderation
  • reporting

These documents show how the principles of the new curriculum will be put into practice.

Source: The following information is taken from the Learning and Teaching Scotland website and the Scottish Qualifications Authority website.

A Framework for Assessment

The framework sets out the role of assessment as aiming to create:

  • a more effective assessment system, focusing on breadth and depth and on skills development

  • better links between the different stages of education to allow smooth transitions in learning

  • better understanding of effective assessment practice leading to more consistent assessment

  • more independence and professional responsibility for teachers

Further information is available from Learning and Teaching Scotland. Information provided includes details of support materials and guidance on building your curriculum for teaching staff.

Assessment Information

“The principles of Curriculum for Excellence apply to assessment in a way that achieves coherence across experiences and outcomes, learning and teaching and assessment practice” (Learning and Teaching Scotland, 2010).

Assessment is an essential part of learning and teaching as it gives a picture of a child’s progress and identifies future areas of learning.

Learners should be engaged in their learning and assessment and should be given some choice in showing how they achieved the outcomes.

The assessment section of the LTS website gives details about assessment in the new curriculum, including support materials and assessment resources.

Sharing practice

Sharing practice resources on LTS provides links to many examples of good practice in schools in Scotland.

At present the emerging resources are in development and are likely to change once they have been through a quality control process. Suitable materials will be published on the National Assessment Resource in September 2010.

Qualifications and examinations

The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) has provided support materials and documentation to help in the delivery of qualifications in schools.

Information present includes:

  • qualifications available

  • assessment guides

  • assessment arrangements

  • appeals information

  • continuous professional development

  • understanding standards, including information on course content and sample marking guidelines

At present they are developing new qualifications which will be used to support the new curriculum. More information can be found on the SQA website and specific information on subject areas is available
