Early Years - Early Education and Childcare Service

There are 21 Council Early Education and Childcare Centres providing 3 and 4 year olds with a part time nursery place and the opportunity to purchase additional childcare, depending on spare capacity.  7 of these centres can cater for children under 3 years and 4 provide Out of School Care for primary age children.

"Children in Need" and those whose parents are in need of respite due to stresses in their lives can access daycare in these centres.  All Early Education and Childcare Centres have the potential to offer daycare / childcare over an extended day and year in response to need and demand.

All our centres are non-denominational and co-educational.  We respect and welcome children and parents of all religions, faiths and beliefs.

In some circumstances daycare places can be commissioned with specially selected registered childminders who are linked to some centres.

Partner Nurseries

There are 9 private nurseries contracted to provide pre-school places for those 3 and 4 year olds whose parents require additional childcare which cannot be obtained in the Council's Early Education and Childcare Centres.

Commissioning contracts are reviewed on an annual basis in relation to Care Commission / HMIe inspections and progress in addressing areas for development.

More information is available at Childcare Information Service.

Out of School Care

In addition to the Out of School facilities within Early Education and Childcare Centres, there are 6 parent-managed out of school clubs based in schools and community halls.  Private providers operate a further 5 clubs.

More information is available at Childcare Information Service.

All local authority Early Education and Childcare Centres and Partner Centres are registered with the Care Commission.  They are inspected by both the Care Inspectorate and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education, with the reports being published on the Care Commission and HMIe websites.
