General Information

Clydebank High School is a six year, non-denominational secondary school serving the town of Clydebank. The school has accommodation for 1500 pupils. The current roll is 1396.

Clydebank High School was founded in 1873, the year after the passage of the Education Act which established compulsory secondary schooling. From its early building at the shipyards the school used various sites in the town, before occupying the Miller Street building for many years and finally moving to its existing campus in the 1940s.

The present old building was constructed in the period immediately before the Second World War, but only fully occupied in 1947. It was remodelled in the early seventies when major extensions (the "Tower Block" and Technical block) were added.

Recent years have seen:

  • the upgrading of the Home Economics classrooms and Science labs

  • the replacement of all windows in the east elevation of the Tower Block

  • the replacement of some windows in the west elevation of the Tower Block

  • the replacement of windows in the north elevation of the main building

  • the wiring of the entire school to provide Internet access to all departments.

In session 2002/2003 a new fitness suite was added. A new recording studio was completed 2 years ago. With the closure of Braidfield High School in June 2006 further work was done on the fabric of the building, including the provision of a new suite of offices for Senior Management and Support Staff, upgraded toilet facilities for all pupils and upgraded disabled toilet facilities.

The catchment area serves Clydebank, Bowling, Old Kilpatrick, Hardgate and Duntocher. The area is mainly local authority housing with a growing private housing sector. The school has eight partnership primary schools with whom it has very close links: Carleith, Clydemuir, Edinbarnet, Gavinburn, Goldenhill, Kilbowie, Linnvale and Whitecrook.

The Head Teacher welcomes enquiries at any time and will be pleased to show interested teachers and parents around the school.

Aims of the School

Within the framework of the policies of the Education Department, the main aim of the school is to provide the best possible opportunities for all pupils to fulfil their true potential. We promote a spirit of responsibility and caring towards others, as well as the pursuit of individual excellence in all aspects of a pupil’s education.

Senior pupils, in particular, are encouraged to work in support of the local community.

The school offers a wide range of out of school hours learning opportunities. It has its own school Wind Band, String Ensemble, Senior Vocal Group and choirs who perform at Christmas and throughout the year. Out of hours opportunities include football, badminton, basketball, netball, trampolining, table tennis, dance and skiing.

The Staff

The school is served by a well-qualified and highly motivated staff. This includes an experienced teaching staff with an extensive support team comprising clerical, janitorial, classroom assistant, technician and librarian colleagues. The school has an agreed teaching staffing complement of 107.5 FTE.

The Senior Management Team comprises the Head Teacher, 5 Depute Head Teachers and a Business Manager. There are 16 Principal Teachers of Curriculum and 10 Principal Teachers of Pupil Support.

The Curriculum

The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum at all stages. Pupils follow a common course in S1 and S2. In S3 and S4 all pupils study either 7 or 8 courses, comprising mainly Standard Grade courses. A few subjects offer Higher Still courses at Intermediate or Access levels. Increased use is being made of curriculum flexibility in the design of the curriculum at all stages. In S5 and S6 pupils progress to a full programme of study through the Higher Still framework, including Advanced Higher. The school has close curricular links with all schools in the West Dunbartonshire area. A number of pupils also attend Clydebank College.

Parental Support

The school enjoys strong support from a very active Parent Council, which is actively involved in supporting the work of the school and is encouraged to maintain close links with the teaching staff.
