Building Bridges

In just a few years time, Saint Columba's and Saint Andrew's High Schools will merge, forming a new school.

Members of staff from both schools met recently and spent time learning more about the work currently going on in each school.

At the meeting were Director of Education at West Dunbartonshire, Liz McGinlay, Head of Services Terry Lanagan, Saint Columba's Head Teacher Maureen McGlinchey, and Saint Andrew's Head, Mick Vassey.

The meeting was opened by a speech from the Director of Education, Liz McGinlay, who spoke of the fantastic opportunities which lie ahead with the merger of our two schools.

By the time our new school, Saint Peter the Apostle opens, both sets of staff will have met on a number of occasions and will have established a firm working relationship on which to build a strong, welcoming place for our pupils to continue to learn.

Many departments are already forging ahead with collaborations between pupils, including the Music departments from both schools. At present, both sets of choirs have been rehearsing separately, with the aim of performing together at forthcoming events.

Pupils were also keen to voice their opinions about the new school. Adam Greene and Stephanie Deeley, S1, were more than happy to give us their thoughts:

"Understandably there might be early rivalry because pupils don't know each other, but it's also a chance to mix with others and to form new friendships - if anything, the younger pupils might end up leading the way."

"The building will be nicer to be in. I'd be proud to show people around my new school and to show them how good it is!"

"There will be all new equipment and modern classrooms, with more modern computers.
I'm really looking forward to the new school."

With the new-build due to begin in January 2008, it won't be long before all this potential can be realised, and we look forward to new beginnings.
