Freaky Fortress

Image of girls making a fortress

As part of Enterprise Week,
S1 pupils were involved in an activity called 'Freaky Fortress', an event brought to St Columba's by a company called MindVision.

The purpose of the event was to promote enterprising attitudes such as: recognising the importance of teamwork, having increased confidence and being determined to succeed with challenges. Pupils worked in teams of five, to create a 3D model of a fortress from many small parts, without the aid of a picture.

Only one member of each team was allowed to see the finished fortress, and it was that team member's job to communicate to the others how the model should be constructed.

Questionnaires were given to pupils at the start of the event and then again at the end. It is clear from the responses below that the pupils enjoyed the event whilst learning new, enterprising skills:

"Great, because we learned to work together!"

"A Great experience and it helps you understand who you are"

Another event taking place during Enterprise week was the Young Inventors Day.

The Young Enterprise group, made up of S6 pupils, organised this event for primary 6 and 7 pupils from our associate primary schools.

Pupils from St Eunan's, St Mary's, St Joseph's and St Clare's took part, with each school bringing two teams of 5 pupils to the event.

The purpose of the event was to see how inventive pupils could be, using only a small selection of materials. Equipment consisted of items such as cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, arts and crafts resources, and paper. The teams were asked to plan, design and create a product based on one of the following themes:

  • something to help the environment

  • something to be used in schools

  • something related to food and drink.

Each group had to build a model of their product and give a presentation on how it would work.
Questions could then be asked by other teams.

After a close-run contest the judges announced that the winning team was from St Mary's.

They had created a special drinks bottle to be used by runners when on the move.

Pupil responses showed that the day was extremely popular, and the Young Enterprise team were praised for their organisation of the event.

Special thanks go to Susan Wright and
Denise McKinnon from West Dunbartonshire Council. Donna Moore from Careers Scotland and our judges also gave fantastic advice and support.
