King of Diamonds

A group of 45 pupils were lucky enough to be invited to attend the launch of HMS Diamond, the Royal Navy's newest ship

The ship is one of a number of Destroyers which is being built on the Clyde. The launch of HMS Diamond was a particularly important event, as it shows that Glasgow's shipbuilding industry still has as much relevance today as it did when famous ships such as the QE2 were launched back in the 1960s.

Over 5000 school children attended the launch of this magnificent ship, coming from all over Scotland to see the spectacle for themselves.

There were several guests of honour who took part in the official ceremony at the launch. Prayers were said, hymns sung, and finally the National Anthem before the ship was launched. It was a great atmosphere on a great day, as well as a memorable experience for the pupils to see the shipyards on the Clyde, where many of their grandparents may have worked.

S2 Pupil John McGinn attended the event, and commented:

"It was a really fantastic day out!
It was a great experience and there was a terrific atmosphere. I'm really glad I was able to attend this occasion!"
